During the months of June and July we have featured the profiles of several of the great Straight Egyptian Arabians from the past, both stallions and mares. In the month of August we’re opting to present two articles from Volume XII of the Reference Handbook of Straight Egyptian Horses. Both of them were written by Joe Ferriss for The Pyramid Society (now known as The Pyramid Society Foundation). The information is interesting, compelling and provides a sobering reminder of just how important diversity of bloodlines really is.
Dr. Matthew Binns, renowned geneticist and member of the Equine Genome Project, spoke during our Breeder’s Conference in 2013. Near the end of his presentation he summed it all up in just two words: cherish diversity. He spoke again at a conference in Egypt in 2014 and repeated this same phrase: cherish diversity. Ten years have passed, and still others have emphasized and continue to emphasize this important aspect of horse breeding. As guardians and stewards, entrusted with a mission to preserve the Egyptian Arabian Horse, we must give heed. The future of this horse depends on it. What decisions are we making today which demonstrate that we truly cherish diversity?
