Legacy: In Tribute to the Egyptian Arabian Horse - Nashua

Today we head East, across the Pond, as they say, to the small town of Grossenkneten in Germany and the home of Dr. Hans Nagel, of the world-renowned Katharinenhof Stud.

Here we find the living tributes to the early foundation horses of Dr. Nagel’s legendary horses. In this photo by Rik Van Lent Jr as published in Dr. Nagel’s book, The Arabian Horse: Nature’s Creation and the Art of Breeding, we see the two broodmatrons, Hanan and Lotfeia. Side by side as they are in the pedigree of the featured mare Nashua who was by the Hanan son, Salaa El Dine

(x Ansata Halim Shah) and out of Lotfeia (Alaa El Din x Bint Kamla [El Sareei x Kamla]. The biographical sketch provided by Dr. Nagel highlights Nashua’s extreme value as a broodmare. She seems to have come by it all quite naturally. Her maternal half sister was the lovely Ibn Galal I-7, leased by Don & Judith Forbis of Ansata Arabian Stud, and was a U.S. Top Ten Mare in very stiff competition. Her full sister and brother Nashwa and Nejdy proved themselves to

be great breeding horses. It has been noted before that El Sareei, Nashua’s maternal great grandsire was the full brother of Maisa (dam of the Nazeer daughter Bint Maisa El Saghira), and her tail female great granddam, Kamla, was a daughter of the Mansour son, Sheikh Al Arab who was a maternal half brother to Bint Bint Sabbah, acquired by Henry Babson, Bukra the dam of Bint Bukra and Husnia (Ansata Bint Bukra) and Layla, dam of Komeira, dam of the Nazeer daughter, Kamar who was the mother of 9 Tamria (x Tuhotmos), Kahramana (x Anter), Wahag (x Anter), and several others.

What an illustrious line of horses. Dr. Nagel very much appreciated the blood of the Nazeer son, Alaa El Din (x the Shahloul daughter, Kateefa), who seems to have provided a nice blend in the pedigree of Nashua through both Hanan as well as Lotfeia. One has but to travel to Kuwait or Qatar to see the international influence of Nashua, or there at home in Germany. She is a tribute not only to her illustrious ancestors, but to her breeder, Dr. Nagel, as well. May her influence remain forever strong.
