Legacy: In Tribute to the Egyptian Arabian Horse - Bint Mona

This is the 7th installment of this series which began June 7, 2024, wherein we continue to highlight the stories of Straight Egyptian Arabians that were originally featured in the Legacy Section of Volume XII of the Reference Handbook of Straight Egyptian Horses. This special section featured the horses themselves along with endearing stories of the special relationship they shared with the humans in their lives. It has been fun hearing from not only the owners of these horses, but also from others who had the opportunity to interact with them as well. We trust you’ll enjoy them, too, and look forward to hearing from you about the impact these horses may have had in your own lives, either individually, up close and personal, or through their descendants.

Bint Mona (Bint Mouna) was a favorite of the early Gleannloch imports. She was by Nazeer and out of the Moniet El Nefous daughter, Mouna (x Sid Abouhom). Mouna is reported to have been the most extreme of the Moniet El Nefous daughters. Nazeer, characteristically, let the best of the mare shine through while adding an indefinable essence to most of his get, and his daughter, Bint Mona, had it in spades! She was in foal to Anter at the time of her importation. The result was Ibn Antar. Next was her son, Mohssen (x Ansata Ibn Halima). Mohssen is said to have resembled his dam more than any of her offspring and seemed to be the perfect blend of his sire and dam. Mohssen was Champion Stallion every time shown and went on to be named Canadian National Top Ten Stallion in 1972. He was followed by The Egyptian Prince (result of a full blood brother, Morafic, being bred to his full blood sister, Bint Mona). Then followed U.S. National Champion Futurity Mare, Il Muna, but unfortunately she was barren and never produced a foal. Other full siblings followed: Illaila, Bint Bint Mona, and Norra. And prior to her importation to the United States, Bint Mouna produced another filly by Morafic, the chestnut Farfoura. Bint Mouna and her full sister, Ibtsam have produced a valuable branch of the Mouna family in the United States, in Kuwait and other parts of the world. She also produced a daughter, Atteyah Riyala, and son, Melouki, by Ibn Hafiza, the important broodmare, Falmona (x Faleh) and finally her last son, Ibn Talal (x Talal). She produced 13 foals in her lifetime and certainly left a strong family which has bred forward into the future through her sons as well as her daughters. Rhita McNair confirmed something many have seen for themselves, “she was one of the loveliest of the Nazeer daughters.”
